My head-first dive into YouTube continues…

This week, in addition to my interview with career coach Mark Wigginton, I posted the next video in my build-in-public series—and earned my first snarky comment. (A true rite of passage for anyone creating online.)

Here’s what’s inside this post:

  • Why those “random” skills from your past might be more useful than you think.

  • A peek behind the curtain at the content system I’m building in real time.

  • A dead-simple prompt to put the new ChatGPT-5 through its paces.

  • A short playlist of 80s tunes guaranteed to trigger a few warm-and-fuzzy flashbacks.

The through-line? Every skill you’ve picked up along the way—whether you’ve used it in years or not—has value.

Let’s jump in…

Old Skills Matter

In this week’s podcast, I talked with midlife transition coach Mark Wigginton.

One of my favorite parts of the discussion was when Mark reminded us of how the skills you’ve already built never really leave you. You just don’t always know when they’ll show up again.

Mark asked me questions about my past work—from booking gigs as a musician to selling RVs—and pointed out how those same skills show up today in how I sell, market, and connect with people.

That cold-call persistence I used on bar owners? Still works when pitching collaborations.

The way I handled objections back then? Still useful when explaining why an email list beats a social following (and brushing off snarky YouTube commenters)

If you think your old skills are irrelevant, think again. They’re part of your toolbox, waiting for the right moment to come off the shelf.

Here’s the entire conversation…

The Plan Using Old Skills

In my second behind-the-scenes video, I shared what it looks like on the other side of the newsletter you’re reading right now.

It’s the foundation of the system… errr… flywheel I’m building, based on almost 20 years of marketing skills I’ve been adding to my toolbox:

  • Starts with YouTube (searchable, evergreen content)

  • Gets repurposed into a blogletter (via Beehiiv)

  • Pulled into AI tools for reuse (summaries, quotes, ideation, etc)

  • Shared on Facebook and LinkedIn

  • All driving back to an email list

Each piece links to the next. The newsletter is the hub.

Owned. Evergreen. Searchable. That’s the system I’m after.

The goal? Make your content act like a robo-salesperson working 24/7/365 to bring more Redefiners like you to the newsletter.

Watch the video to see what I’m doing…

Psst… if you have a moment, I'd appreciate it if you could subscribe to my channel and maybe give this video a like or drop a comment. Every little bit helps and would be greatly appreciated.

AI Tip of the Week

GPT-5 is out. But instead of summarizing the new features like everyone else, I want to give you something better.

I've noticed that keeping resources and information current while using AI can get a little tricky.

It's similar to when I used to manage paperwork for many product lines in my draftsman days.

I created this prompt because I was hoping I could simply ask the AI to update everything. It might not be possible yet, but this prompt is a move in the right direction.

Here’s what I did:

First, ask ChatGPT about the new features (to prime the pump a little)

Then, ask ChatGPT to tell you how to use it better.

Copy and paste this prompt into ChatGPT…

Review my all of my past chats, work projects and priorities, then give me 10 improvements I can make using new features in GPT-5.

Try it. Watch what comes back.

Music of the Week

Instead of just dropping one song this week, I’m giving you a whole vibe, plus another example of how an “old” skill (podcasting) is paying off on YouTube.

A few years back, I recorded a high-energy episode featuring Eddie Money, Pat Benatar, Rick Springfield, and more. It still holds up.

This mix is best served with a late-summer garage cleanout, a backyard hangout, or a road trip in your IROC—T-tops off, of course.

Hit play and see how many tunes you still know by heart…

It’s on Spotify too if you’re over there - just tap here.

Takeaways

If you're a content-first creator or solopreneur, here’s the short version:

  • Those “random” skills you picked up in past jobs, side gigs, or hobbies? They’re not random. They’re your edge—bring them back into play.

  • Don’t just crank out posts and videos—build a system that turns them into email signups, blog traffic, and offers people actually see.

  • GPT-5 doesn’t need a manual. It needs your history, context, and ideas. Feed it that, then let it show you what you’ve been missing.

So if you want to put those into action, here are two ways I can help you this week

  1. Want a content system like mine? Grab the AI Newsletter Fast-Track Guide and use the tools and prompts I used to start building mine.

  2. Already creating, but don’t have a flywheel? Book a free 30-minute session and I’ll show you where to start.

Have a good one,
